Survey with the TLK100

The importance of completing a site survey is critical when looking to implement a two-way radio system.
Why survey?
The purpose of the site survey is to ensure you are covering the required footprint without blackspots. If identified, alternative solutions can be discussed and implemented ensuring full coverage of the site. A site survey also provides a great understanding of how you and your team work and also, what plans that you may have for the future. With this understanding, recommending the right two-way radio for you becomes so much easier ensuring that you have a fully functional and resilient two-way radio system both for today and the years ahead.
Survey with the TLK100
When we conduct a survey for the Motorola WAVE PTX™ TLK100, our focus is on both the cellular connection / strength and Wi-Fi connectivity.
An accurate and useful measure of cell phone signal strength is decibels. The signal strength is calculated using dBm (or decibel milliwatts) as its standard unit of measure. On a signal strength meter, dBm is typically expressed as a negative number – such as -78.
So what is a good signal strength? The closer to zero the dBm reading is, the stronger the signal.
- Close to no signal strength = -110 dBm
- Poor signal strength = -85 dBm to -100 dBm
- Good signal strength = -65dBm to -84dBm
- Excellent signal strength = -64 dBm to -50dBm
So clearly, when we undertake a site survey utilising the TLK100 radio, we will test across the applicable footprint, registering successful/failed calls whilst looking for as strong a signal strength as possible. If the signal strength is not as strong as desired, there are solutions that we can implement, such as signal boosters.
In addition to the cellular testing, we will also ensure that your Wi-Fi can mate with your TLK100 device. This should be a simple process where all we would need is the SSID and password. We would then test with cellular switched off and Wi-Fi on to ensure connectivity. We will always advise that the devices are used with private/closed Wi-Fi networks rather than open/public networks. Additional assistance is available if further input is needed when faced with firewall and port questions.
